Overall I did enjoy the show.
I went into it expecting a full-blown comedy since it's labelled as a comedy, so at first found the sombre nature of it quite confusing and off-putting. Once I had reprogrammed my brain and told myself that I was instead watching a somewhat lighthearted drama with occasional comedic moments, I definitely enjoyed it much more. I would not say that it belongs in the comedy genre and if you go into it expecting jokes or farce then you will not enjoy this show, the humour is far more subtle and spread out.
I thought the characters were decently likeable. I don't know how believable it is that Miri has just come out of a 20-or-so year prison sentence, but then again I've never met anyone who has been in prison. She's just sort of down-to-earth and nice. The relationship between Miri and Billy felt quite fresh and was really very sweet. The parole officer lady felt like she was trying way too hard to be funny but was still alright. I think Lara and her parents are quite glossed over as characters and could have done with a bit more fleshing out, but perhaps the writers didn't want us to feel too much sympathy for them since Miri is the main character?
Finally, the plot felt quite contrived. It was clear at every turn exactly what was going to happen next, and the stakes never particularly felt high. Had the show been an all out comedy it would have been a decent enough story, but with this more subtly style of comedy I think the drama element really needed to pull through a little more to keep things interesting.
It's a decent show and I like that everything is resolved and it concludes after two series instead of running on. It probably won't make you laugh out loud, it probably won't surprise you, and it probably won't have you on the edge of your seat. But it's not bad.
