Nick Fuss

While generally more enjoyable than some other recent swings at Sci Fi (see: Rebel Moon), and a decent watch with some really well done effects.. it just misses the mark in so many other areas which stopped it from being "good" My main gripe is the amount of innocent people the protagonist (who is apparently human) completely sacrifices and doesn't seem to care at all.. this coupled with the never ending lost puppy syndrome makes his character just really unlikable leaving almost nobody to root for. The motivations are just muddled and unclear throughout.. never quite coalescing into anything that has any sort of sense to it. Why would AI continue to mimic human predecessors like old grandmas, with no apparent visual reason? Why do the AI soldiers not have enhanced strength? At war, why have they not developed better technology than repurposed old war guns? Why do none of the AI characters have ANY sort of communication other than direct AV? True AI would be able to learn at an accelerated rate.. and let's not even mention the random tentacle "monster" at the end that was absolutely useless, and how the supermassive star destroyer NOMAD has no security to speak of, and no defense systems.. The highlight of the whole movie I think is the performance of "Alphie" by Madeleine Yuna Voyles.. fairly amazing especially considering the tricky role and shaky subject matter. Last point - the supermassive star destroyer crashing back down to earth from orbit... this one kind of just ruined the whole thing for me. I know it is make believe but it should be rooted in some sort of reality.. the collateral damage would have been apocalyptic.
