Spoilers ahead.
Honestly can’t believe people are calling this a masterpiece. Not only was it very damaging and stigmatizing of mental illness, there was nothing compelling about the plot. It was middle of the road, but what makes it 1 star for me is the constant jabs at mentally ill people being “crazy” or “unhinged.”
It just wasn’t very scary, and the whole “mystery” of the demon or entity was predictable. The ending wasn’t satisfying at all due to the fact that it ended exactly the way it would’ve if they hadn’t gone through all the trouble to look into it, and I find it unrealistic that after she and Joel found out how the thing spread that he just stood there and watched her kill herself.
I saw another review talking about how similar it was to Hereditary, and I agree. They tried to pull off the whole “is this really happening or isn’t it?” thing that Hereditary did to make the audience question what they were seeing except they fell very short of the craft and genius of Hereditary and landed somewhere contrived and boring.
I was so excited to watch this movie and honestly I am so so disappointed.
