Cinematically engaging and spectacular. Casting however was underwhelming given the gravity of the emotion expected alongside the seriousness of the crimes.
Watching the trailer I anticipated it would be similar to 'The Dressmaker', as far as murder, mystery and twists in the plot, but The Dry fell far short of that, leaving me with more questions than answers!
SPOILER ALERT!
Why didn't Aaron speak up at the time of Ellies disappearance, knowing her had no part in her death? Why did Luke need Aaron's collusion with an alibi, given he also had nothing to do with Ellie's death? Why did Luke father allude to them being involved stating he saw them returning from the river, when they were not together? It was a cold case murder and yet there was just one rookie policeman there to pick up the pieces - murder suicides would have a police/investigative team there in no time to assess the crime scenes and evidence at hand, yet here is an off duty policeman there handling evidence and the crime scenes like a regular guy!
Why was the teacher compelled to murder Luke, his wife and their son over a gambling problem? Why didn't he just leave the town, as he had left Melbourne?? Why was Aaron, now a AFP, not compelled to clear his name and solve Ellie's murder much earlier?? He just says nothing in the face of outright accusations - by the murderer too!!! And Aaron's poor father! He knew his son was lying about rabbit shooting, so would have been cruelly tormented by his sons lie and what really happened - for over 20 years!
The story is far fetched and unrealistic, annoying to watch and finish with no closure - a flat and unsatisfying ending.
