It's a simplistic, by the numbers style movie, focused on the first 12 American soldiers who went to Afghanistan, post 9/11, to assist General Dostum in the anti Taliban offensive, effectively starting the 'Afghanistan War'. What makes this worth a one time watch for sure, is that these 12 men fought on horseback, and the movie really takes the viewer into the ground realities of fighting amongst the rugged mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, interspersed with a few scenes showing the reality of what life would've been like then, for villages under Taliban's control. Chris Hemsworth's restrained acting and the moments shared between his character and that of General Dostum, are easily the best part of this otherwise slow paced war machine. Then again, the machinery of war often does move slowly, when you're fighting in a place called the 'graveyard of empires', where girls above the age of eight cannot be educated, and life itself is as simple as waking up, eating, toiling, sleeping and dying.
