I was waiting with anticipation to see this film. The original was so special. Refreshing. Skillful. A family drama set against a horror backdrop.
Considering Krasinski watched Aliens to prepare for this, I fully expected Emily Blunt to go all Ripley in the sequel, especially after that final scene in the original.
However, Krasinski chose to switch the focus to the kids. For their part, both Simmonds and Jupe upped their game to the next level this time and delivered performances worthy of lead status.
Aside from the underuse of Djimon Housou (credited only as “Man on island) and Cilliam Murphy, who turned in a solid performance, but had no prayer of matching the heart and intensity of Krasinski in the original, I enjoyed the movie a great deal. It’s a solid sequel. It deserves to be seen in a theater with great sound.
I’m looking forward to seeing the next one. Especially since Krasinski made the wise choice of passing the reigns to Jeff Nichols, who is taking over the writing and directing duties.
