This book was witty and thought provoking, with a narrational voice that gives a strange sense of distance between the reader and the characters that becomes simultaneously comforting, relieving, and off putting at different points. Nell Zink’s clinical treatment of whiteness is perfectly done to illustrate the ways that race changes over the time and artful makes clear through the course of the story how arbitrary, socially constructed, systematic, and oppressive race is. All this through a fast paced story that will have you laughing as often if not more than you cringe or cry. I couldn’t put this book down!
