I thought it was an interesting story, more so the parts dealing with Washington politics than Hollywood. It piqued my interest and got me to research both the Wilson and Harding administration’s a little more.

The story was disjointed. Characters come in and out with dubious connection. Including the woman supposedly connected to the UN who walks in out of nowhere and who gives orders every one obeys. Spade himself asks her, why he should believe her yet lets her walk away wit the child who was the center of this wayward mystery. The whole thing was a waste of time.

Too much extraneous dialog hurt the flow of the story. Everyone seems to have a smart answer which could pass for humor but becomes tedious. For a who done it the mystery was solvable but I kept reading to see if there were twists, there weren’t. Once the killer was identified, it was back to an epilogue that was way too much like the rest of the novel.
