Thiruchitrambalam
As complex as the movie title may sound, this film is quite the opposite. It is about a simple man, living the simple life but trying to overcome or rather suppress his internal complexities and his inner demons.
The premise may be as uncomplicated as an apple palam but what the director has done is he has created a fruit salad of emotions that come pouring out from us as we get engrossed with each and every character, be it rooting for the awesome friendship between the lovely Nithya Menon and Dhanush or feeling melancholy with Dhanush after all his love rejections or fearing the stern and strict officer/father in Prakash Raj. But in another sentimental scenario, we also feel empathetic towards the same Prakash Raj we feared. And that is what is special about this movie in that none of the characters are just two dimensional. We get to see why they are the way they are as the story unfolds in such a beautiful way and how they change for the better.
At its heart, this movie is a romcom but not in the traditional way of boy gets girl, girls rejects boy and they reconcile at the end. Rather it is a realistic approach on how a simple guy overcomes loss and tragedy and whether or not he loses his inhibitions to become a bigger man than his fears and ego and ofcourse if he ultimately gets the girl. And that is why this movie strikes a chord in all of us. Because it is so real. It is about Dhanush, it is about you and it is about me and it is about how it is upto us to make the ups of life overshadow the downs and to simply the smell the fresh grass on the other side.
It would be a sin if I did not mention about who I felt was the real hero of the story (though this is a strictly non-hero movie). Our very own or "nam iniya" Bharathi Raja. The amazing and unique chemistry that he shares with everyone including Nithya, Dhanush and Prakash Raj, respectively, is like a sweet mango that warms our very soul, moves us to tears, makes us laugh and is such a huge pleasure to watch.
