I am a huge natural disaster movie fan, specifically tornado movies. I grew up living in tornado ally so my fascination for tornado movies specifically was very similar to why people like true crime. The last big tornado movie that came out was nearly 10 years ago and it was called into the storm. Unfortunately, it was all good fun but not very quality. BUT THIS MOVIE. In my best Stefan voice I will tell you “this movie has everything.”
The action sequences are frequent and grow in size and intensity as the movie goes on. The movie starts with probably one of the most intense scenes I’ve seen in a while and I knew from then on that this movie was gonna be good. Daisy Edgar jones delivers an amazing performance as a small Midwest storm chasing savant who has a gift for spotting specifically tornado development. My only complaint for her character is that she went from doing a bland American accent to a thick southern twang accent from sentence to sentence. You have to give her grace tho considering she’s not even American. glen powell’s performance from start to finish is honestly perfection. Him and daisy have such incredible chemistry. I think my favorite thing about this whole movie is how many layers it has. It’s very multifaceted. There are so many different dynamics and interactions and it’s not the normal story of 2 different teams with different motives fighting to the top only to come together at the very end. The ‘bad guys aren’t persuaded by the protagonists to see their corrupt ways. Because they don’t. The ‘bad guys’ who are only into storm chasing for the money don’t change which for whatever reason, I love.
Something very unique happened in this movie and it’s really what made this movie probably one my favorite movie I’ve ever seen. I feel like so often, main characters have forced romance for the sake of giving the movie a romance to follow. And so often, it comes off forced to the audience. But not this because it never becomes about them falling madly in love. It’s about them having such a deep seated love and fascination for such a specific thing… tornados and the science behind them. And this doesn’t shift. It’s not about love. It’s about feeling like you’re the only one who feels this way and loves something so uniquely like this and then meeting someone who sees you and just gets it. Yes, they do have chemistry but it doesn’t come from lust or sexual tension, it comes from respect, admiration and understanding and the ever so strong ✨trauma bond✨
Seriously, go see this movie.
