Thi is a great show, is different and refreshing. I think that more than a competition, it highlights great food, amazing chefs, and teamwork. I also have to recognize that the production of the tv show didn’t seem as professional as I would expect for an international culinary competition with well known chefs.
At the begin of the show I was unsure whether I would like it. The graphics, animation and the ambiance seemed surprisingly cliche for a tv show. I know in the in the introduction they were trying to portray “the world in a plate” and they literally used a world in the shape of a plate 😑. They also had the world as the studio’s background 😑, and they also showed flags and pictures of each country for each episode 😑. In general the studio didn’t do justice to the show, it seemed like the production just reclicled the studio from “30 minutes to win” and added a globe as a background 😅. They could have been more creative when trying to represent diversity. I get that is an international competition, but not all countries were represented, and I believe it would make a stronger point if somehow only the countries that were participating were highlighted. Maybe that would encourage more chefs to participate and represent their countries.
I also felt discouraged that there wasn’t enough representation of female chefs. I though all of the female chefs were strong and amazing in their own ways. I feel like somewhat they had the extra layer of pressure to proof that they were good.
I didn’t like the fact that the decision of elimination in each round was made by only one chef. Sometimes I disagreed with the outcomes, and I wasn’t there to taste the food, but as a viewer some decisions made me wonder if the judges made the right choice. In the case of chef Hsu and Takagi I think they should have advanced further in the competition and they were eliminated when there was not mistake in their dish.
In general I liked the show, I continued watching it when I realized that the format was different from other tv shows . I liked that it was a friendly competition, and everyone treated each other with respect. I liked that it encouraged partnership and teamwork. I liked that the chefs participated just for the experience of it. I loved every single dish presented, and even episodes I connected more with the chefs and their stories. Those stories made me realized that the restaurant industry is challenging and require a lot of sacrifices from the chefs. I have more respect for the work chefs do, and I would love to travel the world to meet in person those amazing chefs. Some people may have complained about the main host, but I think he was great. He had a strong knowledge of what was happening in the kitchen and was able to make great insights.
Finally, I still think there should be a prize, or at least some sort of compensation for the time the chefs are in the competition. I get the concept that all chefs are respected, and want to be considered as equals, but at the same time they are spending time away from their family and restaurants.
