When I first saw the trailer to this film, I was hoping it would be something special... and, watching it today, it blew even those expectations out of the water.
First off, Nimona is beautifully animated. Set in a technologically-advanced, yet medieval-esq world, it is unlike almost any setting I have seen utilised.
But more than the setting or stunning animation style, the heart of its story is painstakingly beautiful.
It is a narrative that reiterates the need to be who you are, in whatever form - the trails some may face, and the freedom of true acceptance.
For both adults and younger audiences, it does this in a way that is both positive and poignant, and can apply to many peoples branded 'outside the norm' of society - and teaches this in a gentle way, that whatever makes you different, is not a weakness or monstrosity, but a part of what makes you exactly who you need to be.
The personality of the main protagonist is also extremely fun. She's complex and 'real', and definitely not your typical, no-flawed, Disney-princess hero. Which makes her triumphs, teachings, and problems all the more heartfelt.
All in all, Nimona is a standout and will probably be one of my favourite films for years to come.
