A must see! Brilliant with perfect timing for this generation. This film takes us on a journey through the trials of a very personal story of a fearless African American teenage girl who is coping with the death of her mother while she waits for her father to be released from prison in hopes that he and she can live together and have the father and daughter relationship that she dreams about.
While trying to adapt to foster care she displays her knowledge of wrestling and decides to join the boys high school wrestling team to learn how to deal with her anger problems by learning discipline.
The dialogue is superb and real, personal in every breath with a deep sense of emotion that grabs your heart.
Elvire Emanuelle “Moinique” or “Mo,” is Phenomenal putting the audience in a headlock and does not release us until the match is over. I cannot wait to see more from her.
Yahya Abdul-Maken II “Darrel, Mo’s Father also gives us a look into the life and hardships of the African American male that does not know how to be a father because he has not learned how to love and to be loved because of the odd that are against him. He become the Antagonist encouraging his own daughter to fight in bare knuckle cage matches to win money so they can move away and start their own business together.
I also enjoyed “Omari” played by Jharrel Jerome and “Malik” Jared Kemp.
Thank you Olivia Newman and Tamara Meem for this beautiful piece. Hope to work with you soon!
