I thought it was an awful movie, plain and simple. The subject matter of the movie is serious, as the development of the atomic bomb forever changed the course of human history. However, this movie hid behind a wall of historical significance, gravitas and "stunning visuals" because there was really no movie here at all. This movie had nothing that has ever made any movie "good"; there was no story arc, the characters really had no struggles that were central to the plot and the character development was poor. The dialogue was often drowned out by loud, heart rate raising music that was distracting and annoying. I was not impressed by the "stunning visuals"; I know what fire looks like and only children should be amazed at an explosion scene. Although Dr. Oppenheimer was seriously conflicted about the consequences of the atomic bomb in real life, that moral dilemma was only mentioned sparingly throughout a 3 hour long movie and was not central to the plot in any way. Dr. Oppenheimer didn't really seem to struggle in this movie, even if he did in real life. At least one hour of this movie was scientists conversing about how to develop this bomb and there did not seem to be a relevance to the plot. They didn't appear to struggle in their attempts and they were not actively pondering the significance of their work in the movie. If there was not actually a movie-worthy arc during the making of the atomic bomb, then a story line should have been written into it.
The movie was poorly made. Nolan could have probably made a better movie by telling the story more creatively. He probably should have made this a mockumentary. Matt Damon would have made a great narrator, instead of playing some underdeveloped, traitless character. He should have seriously simplified the dialogue and cut it by an hour.
I am extremely skeptical of the marketing behind this movie. I feel that the Barbenheimer joke, which was never funny, and a lot of the online reviews of this movie, are completely fake. I posted bad reviews of the movie to Reddit (to the r/Oppenheimermovie page and the r/movies page) and they were immediately taken down. I believe that these pages are being moderated by film studios who want to pull the wool over the eyes of moviegoers by convincing people that this was a good movie. Google Reviews, which stands at 3.8/5 out of 5 at the time of this post, seems to be the only honest set of audience reviews that I am seeing.
