When I first read the books in middle school, I instantly fell in love with everything; the characters, the plot, the whole world that was created. Leigh Bardugo is an amazing writer, and having her books as I entered the harder years of being a teenager helped me in so many ways. When I heard the news that they were creating a TV series for Shadow and Bone, I freaked out. Lots of squealing, lots of crying, and just a burst of joy knowing that I would be able to see my favorite series and characters come to life. I’ve gone through some of the reviews, and many are stating that the series is boring, or confusing, or the casting/acting is terrible. I have to disagree with all of those claims. For many of the people who wrote them, I beg you to please read the books. It goes into more depth of the background of the characters, explains many of the things that can come across as confusing, and the casting matches extremely well. It’s a lot more difficult to really deep dive into the characters and the plot similarly to the books (because they’re two different medias), so I strongly suggest reading ALL of the books to understand everything. Then when you watch the series, you pick up on all of the little things that the actors do that portrays their characters really well. Yes, they did have to change some of the plot, but it was necessary to incorporate the Six of Crows characters with the Shadow and Bone characters, and the blending of it was really well done. It stuck true to the Crows nature, while not changing the Shadow and Bone plot too much.
Now onto the actors. So many people are saying that the acting was terrible. I thought they did an excellent job. I’ve seen reviews bashing Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) especially. Kit Young played Jesper perfectly. The perfect balance of arrogance and wit, he was honestly my favorite character from the series. Whenever he showed up on screen I knew that I was going to laugh. I can’t wait for Season 2, so then Jesper can get his Wylan. On top of that, seeing all of the interviews and BTS of the cast interacting with one another is really heart warming. They have such a close bond, which is important because then the chemistry is there on screen. They honestly look like a family, and i’m so happy with the casting choices.
So please, before you pass judgement on the show based off of some negative views, read the books, and watch the show, and try and pick up on all of the little details that went into the making of the show. I’m so so so proud of everyone who worked on the show, and I’m excited for a Season 2 (fingers crossed for Nikolai and Wylan). Thank you for creating this masterpiece, because even thinking about it brings a smile to my face.
