My uncle E.J. "Mutt" Evans was the Mayor of Durham, NC back then and has been credited with starting integration in NC, at his 5 & 10 cent type store... at the eating/soda counter.. he removed the chairs so the "colored people" could be served like everyone else. Was called "vertical integration." His son, my cousin author/historian Eli N. Evans (still living), wrote about this in The Provincials - A Personal History of Jews of the South. Comments?
