IDK about the book, but the movie was DUH. SO CHEESY. the acting was terrible, yup the guy is pretty hot, but acting skills are zero. none of them actually could play his/her role, including the support actors. if they were reciting, I guess they could have done a better job.

Lee Joon‑gi is truly good in this drama. I was never a fan of him but after watching this, I am a huuuge fan. He perfected each scene. He could portray a dark, mysterious guy, a lonely, and abandoned person with sad look in his eyes, a just and faithful brother and king, and finally, a happy and cute guy being in love.
