I came into this movie with somewhat low expectations and was surprised to be even more disappointed. I was never a fan of Seth Rogen and his humor but I tried to be optimistic when watching the film. The film isn't entirely bad just very messy. I'll try to break down everything here in this review.
Good:
The best part of this film is the animation. Clearly inspired by the new wave of animation that came after spiderverse, but it still feels fresh and new. It feels fitting for the world and compliments both the action and quirkiness of the characters.
The soundtrack also is very solid, I enjoyed the hip hop and 80's sound. Some songs reminded me of the old TMNT games which I thought was pretty cool.
Bad:
Now here's where I have my complaints.
The humor is is just flat out terrible. Most jokes rely on pop culture references (Music Artists, Movies, Anime, etc.). Its like they expected you to have seen all these before going into the movie (granted I have, but most people would not have). Even the other jokes are overused or just not funny. Especially one joke "Milking" being used several times throughout the movie. Then you have the Gen Z humor that is just seriously unfunny, like the for real said the word "sus" unironically.
Never been a fan of Seth Rogen's humor and I still won't be unfortunately.
Storytelling is ok at best. They tell their own version of the origins of these Iconic characters as well as change most canon from the TMNT. We focus on new characters, our main villain, Superfly. which is dull at best. NO SHREDDER OR KRANG.
Characters have little to zero development and no personality. We all know the Turtles by their personality. Leonardo - Leader, Raphael - Brute, Donatello - Nerdy, Michelangelo - Laid back/silly. That is nonexistent in this film. Plus they changed both Bepop and Rocksteady's characters for no reason I could possibly think of. Little side note but the voice cast was very off for these characters. Too young and too similar sounding as none really give off distinctive voices for their characters.
Conclusion
This film tries way to hard to appeal to the audience and fails tremendously to tell a compelling and fun story, with no development or lore for any characters. Wish I could have enjoyed this movie but instead it was lackluster at best. The turtles deserved better treatment.
