If you are a fan of the musical, you may be surprised at some of the adaptations made to the plot, but they feel like they're in keeping with the spirit of the original production--an evolution for 2021 instead of the world in 2008. The new subplot with Vanessa seems a bit cliche until the payoff at the end of the movie. Sonny's charachter is given great depth and is played with heart and sensitivity. Don't forget to stay through the credits for Mr. Piragua's last scene!
