Douglas Steere's little book may be worth a library of contemporary books on prayer. He writes with the traditional air of the Friends, softly, slowly, with appreciation for the Spirit who enables all prayer. This is not a book to inform or to instruct us in prayer. It is a wise and trusted companion to encourage us. My copy, published by Upper Room Books, has a simple, white book jacket that serves to remind me even as I pick it up that prayer is simple, tender, and intimate with God. So it must be read slowly and when it wakes the Spirit within, it needs be put in practice.
