Combine the funny and quirky Discworld novel series (by Sir Terry Pratchett) with the social and addictive gameplay of a MMORPG and you have a formula for success in my book - and that is exactly what this game offers.
Multi User Dungeons (or MUDs) may seem a bit dated compared to today's graphical game offerings but there are layers, details and fascinating gameplay still present in some modern MUDs and that is especially true of Discworld MUD.
There is so much to do in the game. You could spend time socialising on varies chat channels, clubs and message boards. You can complete quests and missions for rewards. You could spend hours killing enemies in the game and gradually level your character up to become a fearsome opponent. You can run a shop, write for a newspaper, own your own house, craft your own items, go try some mining or try your hand at sailing. You can choose to do some of these things or all of the things (and many more).
There are different guilds and specialisations within those guilds in the game and a limitless levelling system that will keep you wanting to come back. The community is very friendly and helpful too. The optional playerkiller system can really up the challenge to the game (if you are brave enough)!.
The MUD style of game is great for those that enjoy reading and those with a good imagination will find the text-based style very intriguing and real, just as real as any graphical game today. Without the restrictions of graphics, the game can create unique quests, characters and places that would be impossible to emulate in a graphical game.
I have played the game for thousands of hours and plan on playing many more. The main things that keep me coming back are the achievements, the community, the endless and rewarding grind and the new things that can be discovered (and are added all the time).
Most people would not expect such a deep and compelling game to be available completely for free - but it is! A staff of highly talented volunteers create and manage the game and if you have an internet connection you can join in too.
If you could not tell, I highly recommend this game. For it's huge and detailed world, it's humour, deep gameplay and much more besides and I would say it's definitely worth giving a try.
