I watch this movie frequently which may seem strange because I'm a middle aged straight man. Susanna (Winona Ryder) is dangerously close to becoming comfortably institutionalized in a women's mental health hospital. The story grabs you from the very first scene in which she's speaking to Kurtwood Smith who is playing a revered but retired mental health expert as flashbacks are flawlessly and artistically peppered in as the scene progresses. At one point he is asking Susanna "do you smoke pot.. take LSD?" and as she shakes her head "no" her cigarette is all ash, completely untouched and fully intact which is something that often happens in real life when one takes LSD and attempts to smoke a cigarette. I've always wondered if that was meant to reflect that fact and, as I'm writing this now, I'm almost certain it is.
Accompanied by an exceptional soundtrack and ensemble cast the movie continues to flow and cause the viewer to empathize with the characters. Whoopi Goldberg is unbelieveable as the orderly who is in charge of the women's ward. Angelina Jolie steals every scene she's in but only because she's THAT good in this film and deserves to. Like someone before me said- this movie is more like a "friend" I can turn to in times of grief and struggle. Certainly this isn't how many people would regard Girl, Interrupted but I feel grateful that this film is always there when I need it. Also, we miss you, Brittany Murphy :_(
