As an avid reader of books, when I was around 10, mostly science-fiction, by Bradbury, Asimov, among others, I'm amazed that I never read this book. But I do remember seeing this movie at around that age (10/11/12?), since my mother let me watch pretty much anything I wanted to, back then, and this movie left an indelible imprint on my brain. The book lady in the middle part was very impactful.
Fast-forward to now (I'm 57, and hadn't seen this movie in a LONG time!), but it's popped back into my mindset, with everything that's going on, and wrong, in the world. Here is another dystopian film that depict events that just may happen, and may happen within our lifetime. "Objectionable" material (such as books, DVDs, and even media on the Internet) may be removed from our consumption, to create the "groupthink" in 1984, or what happened in "V for Vendetta".
So I've recently purchased this movie, not only on Vudu (which will probably be taken down when that time comes), but also in physical form, as a DVD. I want a physical copy. They're going to have to pry it out of my hands, along with my firearm, when that time comes.
I only gave it 4 stars out of 5, because it's a lot slower than I remember (I do realize it was 1966, after all), but it still deserves a lot of stars just because how impactful it was for me as an adolescent. It helped fuel my passion for reading, as much as reading did, in and of itself.
