The first half of the movie masterfully portrayed the plight of the Indian Housewife and the amount of underappreciated labor she provides to society. The portrayal of the staunch Patriarchal household was a bit of a strawman, but was still well portrayed.
Thats where the movie starts to get very sneaky and mix up 2 issues that are not related to each other. The movie brings up the Sabarimala issue and along with it, a very one sided portrayal of it. The director is certainly allowed his opinion, but the defense for his point of view was very lazy and the strawman he created (have I said strawman too many times? Its not my fault!) was quite contrived.
If that was all there was to that movie, I would still rate it very highly. While I disagree with the director, he is certainly entitled to criticize various aspects of Hindu Culture. But the actions following the main characters "breaking point" was quite disgusting and showed the absolute contempt the director had for Hindu customs and for Hindus themselves. That ending really ruined what was otherwise a very well done movie.
