Okay. I watched this film when I was in grade 9 and I couldn’t stop rewatching some heartbreaking scenes and listening to the soundtrack. Now, I am in university and I still cannot get over the magnificent score along with the complexity in the story, characters, and themes. This is by far my favourite film of all time because it is perfect in EVERY WAY: the character, the conflict, the change, the visuals, the colour symbols, the voice acting, the music. I could just go on and on. In my personal opinion, this film is a very mature and significant step above the first film, and is even better than the first. Many others can agree with me. It has a rich balance of comedic and solemn elements that drive the movie forward much more than the first and third film.
Don’t even get me started with Shen. MOST COMPLEX AND WELL-WRITTEN VILLAIN EVER. There are so many theories and interpretations of Shen’s actions, backstory, and last moments that make audiences feel nothing but pity and sympathy for the character. I love how Po was not the only one who experienced change, Shen also changed psychologically. You can tell at the end where he had learned something he never did before: accepting. He never wanted to accept that he was the problem, that others are right, that there’s still hope for him. He believed that he was permanently broken and scarred and cant be healed. This was why he was so shocked with disbelief that Po, after suffering through so much loss and grief, was STILL able to find peace. Shen was frustrated that he was so stuck in the past, so wrong about everything, and mad at himself, which could be why he accepted his death at the end, admitting that he did not deserve to live.
I would keep going but I wanna go to sleep so…
Anyways, this is a fantastic movie that shouldn’t even be rated because it’s way too awesome!!!
By the way, the music is so meaningful and Im so impressed at how it can masterfully incorporate Shen’s theme into almost anything. And the fact that Po and Shen’s theme go so well together shows just how connected these two are. Like literally, no other movie in the trilogy portrays such a meaningful connection between the protagonist and antagonist. It’s crazy!
