Had to watch it for an introduction to nursing class while we had a sub, not bad. Didn't particularly enjoy the bits of religion sprinkled here and there, but it wasn't enough to ruin the movie.
I did however think that some things weren't given enough time to explain themselves, mainly his sudden outbursts. In the movie they make it seem like being bullied a tiny bit made him suddenly start attacking people, which I doubt was the case at all. All it took was some teasing and suddenly he's attacking his mother with a hammer and trying to stab a guy?? That's not how it works... If it was I would be a mass murderer by now.
This movie was particularly great at making my unmedicated bipolar self feel every emotion known to man. I smiled at times, other times I wanted to ring someone's neck (namely the racist teacher) or cry.
The miscarriage was another thing I wish was explained more...like....why did it happen? What went wrong?? I realize this was based on true events, but in the movie it just seems to jump-cut and this comes outta left field like a punch to the jaw. Another thing, it felt like there was too many time skips too close together. Just make the movie a little longer and add some more content to each time frame we take a look at.
The ending also felt really abrupt. Like....the parents see the twins then he goes out to talk to press, then you get some text saying what happened after, then the movie is over. It didn't feel like it was wrapped up very well.
I felt tons of respect for the guy after watching the movie....then I looked him up. Then I saw his political views. Then I lost most of that respect.
But the movie was still pretty decent.
