It's only the first episode and you already know Ms. Marvel is going places.
The cintematography is beautiful. The unconventional angles, comic book style graffiti and effects following the storyline and the texting scene between Kamala and Bruno was beautiful. It's refreshing and surprisingly fun!
As a young South Asian girl, I was delighted with the representation in this show. It perfectly captures the dynamics in South Asian families and includes plenty of familiar situations. Being dragged along to the bazaar, the Coke Studio music or listening to your parent's lectures about the most absurd topics are not stereotypical, but take me straight back to my family's living room and dining table. The strict parents are not 'oppressing' her, they are being overprotective as all immigrant parents are. Kamala represents the frustration we feel when we are feel stuck in place by our parents.
Kamala herself? A bright, funny character that has been adapted perfectly from the comics. I've seen complaints that her character copies the awkward good of Kate Bishop or Peter Parker but Kamala represents it in her own way. She's ambitious and intelligent and curious and imaginitive... and makes mistakes like every other sixteen year old.
Speaking of the comics, I've also seen people concerned about the change in her powers or the low stakes of the first episode's plot. First of all, many MCU characters have had their powers altered when adapted to the screen and may I remind you, this is only the first episode. We cannot judge when we don't know what direction this is going on. I'm sure a larger villain and plotline will be introduced, but it doesn't have to be in the very first episode.
Ms Marvel is a promising show that deserves the chance that was given to every other MCU show so far, at least. I'm loving the direction it's going in so far and can't wait for the next episode.
