I love John Oliver and he usually gets his social critiques right on. But his recent show about India’s prime minster was based on the point of view of Modi’s political opponents and my hero John Oliver got it wrong. The Citizens’ Amendment Bill is designed to give refuge to minorities who are discriminated against in three neighboring officially Islamic countries. The CAB allows minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to seek refuge in India, just like groups have refugees have done for centuries including the Parsis, Syrian Christians, and so many others including the Dalai Lama -whom John Oliver would not have been able to interview if Hindus in India had not given him refuge. Btw, this refuge of the Dalai Lama was opposed by Nehru, whom John Oliver praises. Luckily many other Indian leaders opted to help the Dalai Lama. Tell John Oliver to look more deeply into the controversy and don’t just take the noise of the opposition parties! Also in 2002 when the riots erupted in Gujarat after a gang of Muslims burned a train compartment of Hindus killing scores of women and children, Modi had only been chief minister of the state for six weeks. Afterwards he was cleared by the Supreme Court of any involvement or encouragement of the violence in two cases brought before the court. John, do your research and look at all the facts! I’ve spent time in Pakistan and Bangladesh and Hindu minorities are attacked constantly... Modi and the CAB is simply offering them refuge as his predecessors offered the Dalai Lama. And the Registration bill is just like our census... it is not anti-Muslim. Please take another look at the CAB and ask a few Hindu and Christian refugees fleeing religious oppression in Pakistan how they feel about being welcomed in India! Why include Muslims in the CAB? They are not being discriminated against in their Muslim countries, whereas other religious minorities are!!!
