I was especially glad to see this film as we learned this morning that Ms. Toni Morrison had passed away. Ms. Morrison’s clarity as she reflected on the stages of her life transitions through her childhood, through college, through teaching, through her work as an editor, and through her work as a writer reflecting on what she had learned at each turning point, was the mark of a gifted and very wise human being. Turning away from the white gaze in her writing to her own and her black community's core understandings of themselves, each other and their own context, woke many of us up.
