The story promises intrigue and magic - and fails to deliver on both. The intrigue is mostly boring since Theo acts as the all-seeing eye - mainly because nobody else seems to be able to talk out of her presence. Magic is barely explored besides "stones give power" and "magic makes you mad if you aren't worthy" - so the magical elements feel equally bland. Romance aspect is barely explored as well, with it mostly being between our main character and only one other character, where romance takes a huge back seat in the plot.
Still, not too bad of a read. It has the makings of a medieval fantasy version of Divergent, of a Game of Thrones of overthrowing a harsh conqueror.
