I would like to start by saying I was a huge fan of System Shock1/2 and the original Deus Ex (the sequels will not be mentioned due to their dramatic drop in quality in gameplay and writing).
Bioshock scratched that itch to a point but it wasn’t quite there, good story and sub par gameplay mechanics.
I completely missed this at launch and only saw it by accident reading a top ten list somewhere.
This game goes back to the strong narrative and spectacular gameplay mechanics of old, without predatory micro transactions or loot boxes that have belched bile on most games these days. It’s unpredictable, sometimes spooky, sometimes frightening and absolutely worth your time. The Mooncrash DLC (which isn’t just cut content gated off for more money) is completely different and again worth your time.
If you want to sit down, turn your brain off and doomguy it you will be disappointed; this isn’t for you. There is nothing wrong with that type of game and I enjoy them also but it’s important you know this going in : you need to use initiative and not a bigger gun.
A masterpiece. Too rare these days with a market saturated with remakes and “live services with recurrent user spending”. Sadly these seem to be the opiate of the masses, to my chargrin.
