PLEASE do not waste two hours watching this film instead watch the original film made in 1988. The message of women empowerment is present throughout the film but the execution of the film was horrible. The main actor who plays mulan showed little to no reaction to anything. Her voice is bland and overall she left no impact on me. The actor seems to show a straight face in every scene; not once did she show happiness or sadness. She was unable to convey any feelings of sadness when she was being called as a dishonor. Furthermore, the live action stunts were basic and weren’t anything special. To me the original film’s stunts were better than the real life one. In the first scene where mulan was running after the chicken the cuts were choppy and made the actions look like it was shot multiple times. It is surprising to me how disney put so much money into the film and the CGI was horrendous. This film was a major disappointment! The whole plot was different from the original film. The need for a witch was unnecessary and instead they could have used mushu. To me i felt as if the movie was being rushed since within fifteen minutes of the film the bad guy was already introduced. The villain didn’t have any prior development which led it to be boring. In addition no songs were sang during the film. This film has the audacity to calls itself a disney film. This film is a disgrace to the disney industry and i would like to see them do better. The director did a terrible job developing the main characters. The only character who i enjoyed was the father of mulan. Lastly, who is hong hui, i only know li shang. Why would the director change the name of the male protagonist??? In the film aladin, the director didn’t change the name of jasmine to like lily or something like that. The original character names are important! I was so excited for mulan since i love to see representation in my culture but after watching it i wish i could unsee it. I’m telling you now, if you are planning to watch this don’t, it is a major waste of your time instead watch the live remake of aladin.
