I finished the book and was somewhat entertained so I think just one star would be unfair. However, none of the characters was in the least believable or even consistent, and you really couldn't care less what happened to them - apart from the dog, maybe. Instead, they were implausible caricatures functioning as crass vehicles for the author's tedious rants.

I went to see Barbie with my ten year old niece. My understanding was that I was doing her and her mum a favour and I'd get the excellent excuse of being in a cinema to eat stuff I'd never eat anywhere else. From the outset, with its hilarious parody of the enlightenment of the apes from Kubrick's cerebral '2001- A Space Odyssey', I was hooting with laughter. Not so my little companion who found the whole thing confusing and silly. The film is certainly not a celebration of Barbiedom but neither is it a serious critique of patriarchal values; rather, it's an entertaining romp that keeps you chuckling right up to the final joke. Warning: don't bring children or guys.

Some say the plot's a bit far-fetched but I'm from London where, quite honestly, it's not that unusual for the girlfriend of a lesbian vicar to witness the murder of a delivery boy dropping off a pizza at the home of the ex wife of a previous boyfriend of the vicar's and the fact the ex-boyfriend is good friends with the detective in charge and made an application for a student visa for the girl who witnessed the murder is just one of those funny things that the Celestine Prophecies reminds us can happen any time.
