I believe that Robert Harris has written some fine” what if this happened instead “ in history novels and I think the screenwriter did an excellent job of pulling the most pertinent themes from novel that translated to the big screen. The pacing and story telling were top marks and the two male leads just nailed it- especially the German actor, Jannis N. I will be looking for other films he chooses. George Mackey was also solid and August Diehl always creeps me out but in a good way. Finally Jeremy Irons was great as the terrible and naive Neville Chamberlain and he can chew the scenery up with the best of them. Overall a fine piece of film making and story telling that just reinforces the Burke quote “ All evil needs to triumph is for good people to stand by and do nothing”. Only thing I did not think was necessary was the line at the end about how the Munich appeasement allowed the Allie’s another year to prepare for war and subsequently helped them be prepared sufficiently to defeat Nazi Germany - that is h historically way, way off the mark.
