Misako Rocks is back with a full-length, full-color graphic novel about a basketball-loving girl who moves with her family to New York City from Japan.
Lilico is an appealing protagonist but she's also surrounded by a spirited cast of friends and rivals plus her amazing cat Nicco. Things definitely get off to a rocky start for Lilico in her new school. She misses her teammates and friends back in Japan, she has no one to talk to (not even her parents as they're all wrapped up in their own adjustment issues) and she aches to get back on the basketball court where she feels most self-assured.
Pretty soon she's friends with Nala and Henry, two kids into Japanese pop culture. And a really cute guy is helping her get back into playing basketball. It looks as if Lilico's managed to rebound but life isn't finished challenging her. It's all as vivacious and energetic as any of Misako Rocks' other works and readers are sure to enjoy Lilico's adventures as she navigates loneliness and the consequences of her own choices and mistakes with determination, heart and good intentions.
The magical/fantasy elements just add an extra kick as guardian spirit Nicco comes to act as Lilico's conscience and guide. A fun read that'll make you smile and maybe even cry a little.
