First, let me say I've never seen anything else Bob Odenkirk has been in. I live in the town that Richard Russo was a college professor in.
I can't remember but I believe the show starts out with a mediocre man in a mediocre town at a mediocre school. So why the interest in making this into a TV show? Bob Odenkirk is a good actor and there are a few laughs but really this is only going to be of interest to academics. To the rest of us, it's just a mediocre show about a mediocre man.
And it's kind of painful to watch the main character angst over a 50-year-old broken relationship with his father. I do like seeing Diedrich Bader, but he doesn't have a big enough part in the show. (Edit, it got bigger around episode 5). I'm on episode 4 and I'm pretty sure they're going to go down or use as a teaser the old cliche 'professor sleeps with the hot young chick' alley. Yeah it's just a yawn.
Edit to add, well by episode 6 any humor is gone and it's painful to watch. I finished episode 6 with a real feeling of being depressed by the content. Just trying to slog through #7. And, seriously, series used to be 22 episodes, then 20, then 13, then 8 and now Odenkirk gives us SEVEN? Meh, won't watch anymore.
Removing a star because it's gotten worse.
Edit to add, Oh there IS an episode 8! Well it did get better with the last episode. There were actual decent jokes and I like the wife...but yeah this is still pretty snoozy.
