A confronting novel. Based on historical events some thirty years before the United States Civil War. A first person story told through the voice of Nat Turner, a devoutly religious african american slave. Though written by a white author I found this book captured the despair, the desperation and the anger of the main protagonist with such clarity and feeling that at times it felt almost autobiographical. With racism again casting its heinous shadow across much of the Western world I found it timely to read such a thought provoking missive as this.
