The problem that I’m having so far with the show is that every episode ends badly with an unavoidable lesson that many times can’t even be prevented or changed. There’s never a happy ending, not even in “Replay”. Not every episode needs to have a bad ending. The original series had episodes that had happy endings, and that was the fun of it because seeing it the first time you didn’t know if it was going to end badly or not. So far in this new series it’s guaranteed to end badly no matter what, and it can’t be changed even if intentions were good. In the original Twilight Zone, in most cases the people got what they deserved, whether good or bad. Episodes like “Living Doll” portrayed the futile outcome of a horrible stepfather, but also ended with the happy resolution of a stepdaughter being protected and freed from her abuser.
In this new Twilight Zone, even well-intentioned people suffer, the outcome seems unavoidable, and in most cases no one wins. “Replay” would have been a good opportunity to end on a good note. I don’t understand the type of moral storytelling that’s trying to be portrayed. It seems to be a “damned if you do or damned if you don’t” situation every time. It doesn’t fit Rod Serling’s original storytelling or the stories that he chose to use.
