It is a different kind of book. The characters are hard to track, but a family tree would have been helpful. The protagonist okonkwa is potrayed like he wants himself to be more powerful and more respected among the clanmembers. But to view this as an outsider, his thought process does seem toxic. I dont want to give out spoilers. In the later half, where the westerners came into their regions and changed their cultural routine, it is understandable that okonkwa rebels against them, but i feel like it is more like he is angry at his personal disability for not acquiring the highest rank of the clan as he wasted 7 years, and as it couldn't happen,
He was angry.
More than to argue if this is peak of toxicity or not, one should view this book as point of view of another, and how the African society was built and their own cultural and traditional preferences.
