Joseph O'Leary

I read the novel in 1964 and saw the 1978 film -- what was striking about the new version is the theme of tragic love, given a rich set of variations (including hte mandatory Lesbian couple). I doubt if anything like that was in the novel, and it did wonders for the story. The over-complicated solution is probably so well known that few would be stunned by it, so it was necessary to give the whole think this upgrade.
