Before I say what I think of the movie, I want to say that Glenn Close is Academy material in the role of MawMaw. I had to keep reminding myself that under those glasses and behind that hard exterior was Glenn Close - that's how deep into the character she went. For the rest of the movie, I'm trying to put my finger on why I had a sense of discomfort with it. Maybe it's because the word hillbilly keeps being used as the derogatory definition of ALL poor white people living in the Appalachian area and this movie is happy to fall into that stereotype. Amy Adams is a great actor, but it felt like she had no choice but to over-act in this movie. I loved the story (based on a true story) but I wished there had been more nuance in the treatment of addiction. I enjoyed the movie but I wouldn't watch it again.
