My family and I decided to go see this movie today because we enjoyed the first Wreck-It Ralph movie so much. The previews of this movie were cute, and I was anxious to see how they incorporated so many previous princesses into it. I enjoyed way Disney Pixar created the world of the internet, full of iconic images from past and present. The "underworld" of the internet included things like pop-up ads, public chatrooms, and defunct websites/services such as dial-up modems and GeoCities. I also appreciate that they brought on board many of the original voices for some of the Disney Princesses, including non-Pixar voices Jodi Benson (Ariel), Paige O'Hara (Belle), Linda Larkin (Jasmine), Irene Bedard (Pocahontas), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana), and Ming-Na Wen (Mulan). I feel like there was a lot more attention to detail regarding the inner workings of the internet and how humans use it than developing the story or the characters conflict, as it moved rather quickly through the plot. In my personal opinion, however, I loved trying to see how Disney was going to interpret the internet next, from the search engine, to the way Buzzfeed quizzes "work," to the way videos go viral and gather likes. Adults will find these parts funny while they will go right over the kids' heads. (At least, they went over my 9 year old's head). Ultimately, the story is sweet and appears to have an overall theme of friendship, what it means to be a good friend, and how friendships overcome obstacles and evolve over time. Most disappointing to me was that I was waiting for the guaranteed-to-make-you-cry moment at the end that never came.
