Its a dumb, cliche sci-fi plot... executed flawlessly. Its a perfect swashbuckling romp sort of movie, with lovably characters, excellent special effects, and like... and odd mix of pretty good hard sci-fi (Lagrangian point junkyards, the dangers of Kessler syndrome), and soft sci-fi "Fantasy in space". Nothing much makes sense, but really, it doesn't have to.
