Best war movie I have ever seen. I feel sick to my stomach after watching it. I’ve seen all the other big ones. For some reason, never this one. I have never felt like I was really there. Never felt the brutality and evils of war. Never been forced to reflect upon the long since abandoned ideals of my youth and clean image I had of this nation, replaced by the disillusionment of the corrupt nature of nation states, and men as a whole. This is a must-see film. Holds up incredibly well over three decades later. A truly great film. Oliver Stone is one of those unique voices in film. Never sold out for mass appeal. Willem Dafoe’s smile was truly breathtaking in that scene. You felt all at once the peace of knowing you’d seen your brother, and the shift of the realization that your brother Cain had betrayed and was about to murder you. No long pauses. Just shot and left for dead.
What a brutal and necessary film.
