*VERY LIGHT SPOILERS*
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I love that it represents a lot of under represented groups (in Disney movies specifically). Yes, there is a main character who is gay, but it's represented very tastefully & honestly, if introducing this concept to your child makes you uncomfortable, you could almost pretend the love interest is female as he's honestly pretty androgynous. There isn't so much attention to this element that I would expect young children to grasp the concept of a same sex relationship without someone explaining it to them.
Like I said- very tastefully introduced.
The "strange world" is gorgeous & opens up a whole new way of looking at some things that I personally believe small children need to learn as early as they are able to understand it. If you are a parent who wonders if you should let your child watch this, I strongly recommend reading my entire review before deciding against it. Please.
Ok, so the "strange world" is a beautiful representation of life and all of its complexities & how much humans seem to misunderstand it. For most who are opposed to this film, I suspect there are religious reasons. I personally don't understand why science and religion are often in opposing camps. My personal perspective is that science simply seeks to understand all that God created & the more I understand the creation, the more I fall in love with the Creator. That said, I think the strange world has the potential to help children see the beauty that is inside of them and in doing so, can help combat all kinds of things young people today are struggling with in an ever increasing way. Body image, self loathing, hate toward others etc. When a person starts seeing that what's inside is so amazing and beautiful and complex, what's on the outside matters so much less.
If you want your child to love God, their neighbors, and themselves, this movie has immense value if you use it to start conversations about those things. The gay character is only obviously gay if you already know what that is & if that's the case, what does it matter? Honestly.
The biology of humans and animals is so intricate, complex, fascinating & awe inspiring. If you want your kids to know the God who created such beauty in an increasingly ugly world let them see this movie and have conversations about it. Give God the credit for creating such a wonderfully complex vessel and give your kids the lifelong gift of valuing the body they and everyone else was given.
