Horrible acting and poor direction made an interesting underlying story into an insufferable bore. Julia Garner, as Anna, tries to put on a German accent, but she simply sounds like an American doing a really bad imitation of a non-specific foreign accent. It doesn't sound remotely like a German accent. She's terrible in this film! And the acting is way over the top -- and I DON'T mean that in a good way!

I felt the film wasn’t really an improvement, or even as good as, Spielberg’a original version. The music felt mostly anachronistic to me, and didn’t really add to the story in any significant way. The film makes room for the musical numbers by giving only a cursory setup to some of the subplots, which may make it difficult to follow for those that don’t already know the story. When i saw, during the closing credits, that the film was produced by Spielberg and Oprah, my thought was that it seemed like two old film producers trying their milk an old franchise for a few more bucks.
