As someone interested in the history of this time period, I was aware of the antisemitic, pro-Nazi statements by people like Charles Lindbergh and Father Coughlin. But I wasn't prepared for the breadth and depth of efforts to undermine American democracy that went far beyond speechmaking. This book is an eye-opener. That some two dozen members of Congress were active participants in disbursing Nazi propaganda was shocking to learn, even given Ken Burns' "America and the Holocaust," documentary that revealed the extent of antisemitism in the American government. Given the thousands of Americans who were influenced by this effort back then, imagine the millions who are reachable using today's social media?
