This poem shows that appearances are deceptive. Eventhough Richard Cory had everything , in terms of wealth, he lacked happiness. This shows that money cannot buy happiness and how all people wear masks to hide their true emotions. It's a very realistic poem and i loved that. In simple, narrative language this poem truly tells us to not judge a book by it's cover.
