Great movie from start to finish. The humor was particularly noteworthy thanks to great writing and great execution (Hale, Key & Peele, Reeves).
SPOILERS. Most people who did not like the film are unhappy with Woody’s ending. I read some reviews saying that it’s not in his character to leave his kids (Andy or Bonnie). However, the whole movie is trying to show you that Woody is tired. Despite all of the obvious signs throughout the movie (running around for forky everywhere, explicitly saying he’s tired, etc.), his voice (Tom Hanks) actually sounds tired. Woody chose to retire because he knows the job of being Bonnie’s toy is in good hands (Jessie, Buzz, Forky) and he wants to retire with the woman he’s always been in love with (Bo). By the way, this isn’t just a random character he’s leaving the whole gang for. This is Bo, who he’s clearly shown to love and admire throughout the first two movies. If you’ve seen Avengers Endgame, this is exactly what Captain America does at the end of the movie. He knows the job of saving the world is in good hands and he goes and lives a life with the woman he’s always loved. Characters, just like people in real life, are dynamic and are able to change throughout the course of their lives. That’s part of the reason why Pixar makes the best animated movies. Remember that Woody literally wanted to get rid of Buzz in the first movie. Now, he’s running around trying to save Forky to keep Bonnie happy. Woody has clearly changed for the better and he has more than earned his retirement.
