BOOK REVIEW. Real Americans
Just finished reading Real Americans, which is written by Chinese Malaysian writer Rachel Khong. The book is exceptionally well written and the depictions of the relationships in the families is authentic and interesting. Unfortunately the writer has infused the story with some science fiction which becomes the centre of the book’s plot. The science fiction element of the book simply doesn’t work. Ms Khong is clearly not a scientist or has even studied science, and it shows. The first half is excellent, but once the writer introduces the science fiction element, the story goes downhill and loses credibility.
If you want to read about the somewhat overly dramatic family relationships in Chinese culture, then this is a wonderful book. Sadly the plot line turns out to be rather silly.
One other feature of the book is the unnecessary anti white overtones. I guess white bashing is fashionable these days so the author thought she would climb on board, despite the fact that she is a Yale Graduate in Liberal Arts (or maybe because of it). She hardly can be considered a disadvantaged person.
